X Launches Marketplace to Sell Inactive Usernames

X is officially launching a dedicated marketplace for inactive usernames, enabling Premium subscribers to request and purchase high-value handles that were previously unavailable. The platform will feature both free request options and direct purchase opportunities, with rare handles potentially priced from $2,500 to over seven figures.

“Priority” vs. “Rare” Handles: How the System Works

The marketplace distinguishes between two categories of usernames. “Priority” handles—typically full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations like @GabrielJones or @PizzaEater—are free to request for Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers. If approved, X transfers the handle at no additional cost. Users should note that if they cancel or downgrade their subscription, their original handle reverts to their account after a 30-day grace period.

Conversely, “Rare” handles, such as @Pizza, @Tom, or @One, consist of short, generic, or culturally significant names. These are not available via standard requests. Instead, they are distributed through public drops or direct, invitation-only, pre-priced sales. Unlike Priority handles, Rare handles remain with the user even if their Premium subscription ends.

Selection Criteria and Revenue Strategy

For public drops of Rare handles, X evaluates applicants based on their platform history, intended use of the handle, and overall engagement metrics. Direct purchases, meanwhile, are priced based on variables including character length, word popularity, and cultural significance.

This initiative serves as a strategic move for X to diversify revenue streams beyond its struggling advertising business while incentivizing new Premium subscriptions. The company emphasizes that not all requests are guaranteed approval; the standard review process typically takes three business days. Once a request is successfully vetted, the user’s previous handle is immediately reserved to prevent unauthorized access.

Security and Controlled Distribution

X stated on its help page that the marketplace model was chosen over a mass release of handles to mitigate bot spam and misuse. By implementing a controlled, secure distribution process, the platform aims to ensure fairness in how inactive accounts are recycled.

For users eyeing specific inactive handles currently absent from the marketplace, X has introduced a “Watchlist” feature. Interested parties can register their interest, and the platform will provide a notification if the desired handle becomes available for acquisition in the future.
