OpenAI is reportedly developing a proprietary smartphone in partnership with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare, aiming to replace traditional mobile applications with AI-driven agents, according to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
A New Hardware Strategy
Known for his accurate insights into Apple’s supply chain, Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that OpenAI intends to co-design a custom smartphone chip with MediaTek and Qualcomm, while Luxshare will handle manufacturing and design collaboration. This move marks a significant shift from previous rumors, which suggested the company’s initial hardware focus was limited to earbuds.
Replacing Apps with AI Agents
The core philosophy behind this device is the elimination of the traditional app-based ecosystem. Currently, Apple and Google tightly control app access, which limits how deeply AI can integrate into a device. By building its own hardware stack, OpenAI seeks to bypass these restrictions, allowing AI agents to execute tasks directly. This strategy aligns with growing industry sentiment; for instance, Nothing CEO Carl Pei has previously predicted the obsolescence of apps, and developers are increasingly exploring “vibe coding” environments that move away from conventional software structures.
Context-Aware Computing
Kuo notes that the device would be engineered to continuously understand user context. By owning the hardware, OpenAI could capture more comprehensive data on user habits than it ever could as a third-party app provider. To handle complex requests, the phone is expected to utilize a hybrid architecture, combining small on-device models for privacy and speed with robust cloud-based models for intensive tasks.
Development Timeline and Market Entry
The specifications and supply chain for the device are projected to be finalized between late 2024 and early 2025, with mass production slated for 2028. This hardware push supports OpenAI’s long-term goal of scaling ChatGPT, which is already approaching one billion weekly users, into a ubiquitous daily companion.
Expanding the Hardware Portfolio
Earlier this year, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, confirmed that the company is on track to announce its first hardware product in the second half of 2026. While several reports previously pointed toward the development of uniquely designed earbuds, the addition of a smartphone to the roadmap suggests a much broader hardware ambition. OpenAI has not provided a formal comment on these reports at the time of writing.
