X is officially sunsetting its Communities feature due to persistently low user engagement and an overwhelming surge in spam, shifting its focus toward a new messaging-centric strategy.
The Pivot to XChat
To prepare for the migration of former Community members, X is doubling down on XChat, its messaging service currently preparing for a standalone app launch. The platform will introduce “joinable” links for group chats, allowing users to share public links directly on their timelines. These groups currently support up to 500 members, with plans to reach a 1,000-member capacity in the coming weeks.
Despite the closure of the Communities tab, X leadership maintains that the company is not abandoning the concept of interest-based groups, but rather pivoting to a more effective infrastructure.
New Features for Premium Subscribers
In tandem with these changes, the platform has rolled out Custom Timelines for Premium subscribers this week. This feature enables users to pin specific topical feeds to their Home tab, offering a curated and personalized experience tailored to individual engagement patterns.
A Rapid Pace of Innovation
X has significantly accelerated its product development cycle, balancing the upcoming XChat standalone app and a future payments integration with a suite of new feature updates. Recent additions include Cashtags, mute buttons for topics, voice notes in chat, a new photo editor, automatic translations, and new reply settings.
As noted in March, the X development team has established a consistent cadence of launching two to three new features every week, signaling that further platform adjustments are imminent.
Updated to reference the new migration deadline and updated group chat limits.
