Meta has officially dismantled its existing artificial intelligence structure, consolidating its efforts into four specialized groups under the new banner of “Meta Superintelligence Labs” (MSL), following an internal memo confirmed this week.
A Strategic Pivot Under New Leadership
The restructuring, initially signaled by The Information, was formalized just days later, as reported by Bloomberg and The New York Times. The transition is being spearheaded by Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang, who assumed the role of Meta’s chief AI officer this past June.

The core of this reorganization is a newly minted division dubbed “TBD Labs,” which will operate under Wang’s direct oversight. This unit is tasked with the high-stakes development of foundation models, including the company’s flagship Llama series, which saw its most recent iteration launch in April. Beyond TBD Labs, the remaining three groups within MSL will be dedicated to core research, product integration, and the underlying infrastructure required to support these advanced systems.
Closing the Gap on Industry Rivals
This aggressive reshuffling marks the fourth significant organizational shift within Meta’s AI department in just six months. The company is under mounting pressure to accelerate its development cycle, driven by internal concerns that Meta is losing ground to aggressive competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has taken a hands-on approach to this transition, personally overseeing the recruitment efforts for this high-priority group, as noted in a June report from Bloomberg.
