Boston Dynamics treated the robotics world to a festive surprise this week as its new electric Atlas humanoid robot performed a perfect backflip while dressed in a Santa suit. The impressive acrobatic feat appears roughly 13 minutes into a new video released by the company, highlighting the expanding capabilities of its latest model.
Beyond Basic Locomotion
While a backflip is a spectacle for observers, roboticists point out that for a machine, the move is not necessarily more complex than standard walking. However, the industry typically prioritizes functional tasks like stable locomotion before mastering gymnastic maneuvers. The fact that the electric Atlas executes this movement with such precision underscores the robustness of the platform—and, notably, the robot managed to keep its Santa hat firmly in place throughout the entire performance.
A New Era for the Atlas Platform
The electric Atlas is actively building upon the legacy of its hydraulic predecessor, which famously debuted the backflip skill back in 2017. This latest demonstration of agility arrives in a competitive climate, as other manufacturers continue to push boundaries; for instance, Unitree’s humanoid robot has also recently showcased its own gymnastics abilities.
