TikTok remains officially banned in India, the company confirmed on Friday, quashing widespread speculation of a market reentry triggered by a brief, localized accessibility to its website.
Official Stance: The Ban Remains Enforced
A spokesperson for the Chinese-owned social media giant clarified that the platform continues to comply with the Indian government’s directives. “We have not restored access to TikTok in India and continue to comply with the Government of India’s directive,” the company stated in an email.
This position was corroborated by a senior official within India’s IT Ministry. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official confirmed that the government has neither unblocked the platform nor taken any steps to revoke the restrictions originally imposed under Section 69A of the IT Act.
What Triggered the Comeback Rumors?
The confusion began earlier on Friday when several major Indian media outlets suggested that TikTok might be returning. These reports were fueled by social media users who claimed they could access the TikTok website without the use of a VPN—a notable occurrence given that the service has been blocked in the country since June 2020. The ban was part of a broader government crackdown on dozens of Chinese-linked applications following escalating geopolitical tensions.
The Likely Culprit: Network Misconfiguration
Industry observers suggest the temporary access was likely the result of a network-level misconfiguration rather than a policy shift. A similar technical anomaly occurred in September 2022, when specific internet service providers inadvertently unblocked restricted sites while performing routine system patches.
