Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a complete overhaul of Instagram and Facebook for mixed reality during the company’s annual Meta Connect event this Wednesday, aiming to integrate social feeds and Reels directly into the Quest ecosystem.
An Immersive Social Experience
“We’ve got all new Instagram and Facebook experiences to bring your feeds and your Reels with you into mixed reality,” Zuckerberg stated. The new interface is specifically designed for comfort, allowing users to lean back and consume content on expansive, high-definition virtual screens.
Building on Previous Momentum
This official rollout follows Zuckerberg’s June announcement, during which the company first began testing methods for users to view Reels directly within Quest headsets. By redesigning these core social network applications, Meta is aggressively working to unify its disparate apps and hardware systems into a cohesive spatial computing environment.
Upgrading Meta Horizon OS
Beyond the social media updates, the company confirmed that it has rebuilt Meta Horizon OS to better accommodate spatial computing. This update provides enhanced support for 2D applications such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Furthermore, Meta has introduced dynamic spatial audio for “panels”—the rectangular interfaces used to display 2D content—creating a more grounded and realistic audio experience within the virtual workspace.
