Google announced at The Android Show, held ahead of Google I/O 2025, that its Advanced Protection program will receive significant device-level security upgrades with the upcoming Android 16 release. Designed specifically to shield high-risk individuals—such as journalists and politicians—from sophisticated digital threats, the update introduces enhanced log encryption, automated device restarts, and proactive anti-scam measures.
Advanced Threat Detection and Logging
With the launch of Android 16, Google is implementing a robust intrusion logging system tailored for deep threat analysis. This feature ensures that device logs are stored in the cloud using end-to-end encryption. By restricting access to these logs, the system allows for secure, forensic-level analysis should a user suspect their device has been compromised.
Hardening Device Physical and Network Security
To mitigate physical tampering, Google is introducing a new USB protection protocol. When a device is locked, it will restrict USB connections exclusively to charging, preventing unauthorized data access via peripheral devices.
Network security is also receiving a major overhaul. Under the Advanced Protection program, Android 16 will proactively prevent devices from automatically reconnecting to unsecured Wi-Fi networks, effectively closing a common vector for man-in-the-middle attacks.
Automated Security Restarts
Google confirmed that devices enrolled in the Advanced Protection program will now automatically restart if they remain locked for 72 consecutive hours. This feature, previously identified in Google Play services updates, serves as a safeguard to clear volatile memory and disrupt persistent unauthorized access attempts.
Real-Time Scam Prevention
The program is also integrating advanced on-device processing to combat telephony-based fraud. By analyzing conversations locally, the system can detect potential scams during live phone calls. This privacy-focused feature, which debuted on Pixel devices earlier this year, will now be a core component of the Advanced Protection suite for Android 16 users.
