Instagram officially rolled out a “Watch History” feature on Friday, allowing users to easily revisit previously viewed Reels and recover content lost due to interruptions or accidental app closures.
Never Lose a Reel Again
The new functionality addresses a common user frustration: losing track of a video after a phone call, an accidental app swipe, or a simple distraction. As Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained in an announcement, users can now access their viewing activity by navigating to their “Profile,” selecting “Settings,” and tapping “Your Activity.” From there, the “Watch History” tab displays every Reel previously watched on the platform.
Advanced Sorting and Management
Mirroring the functionality found on rival platform TikTok, Instagram’s version allows for granular control over your history. Users can sort their viewed videos by specific date ranges—including the past week or month—or remove individual items from the list if they prefer to keep their history clean.
Competitive Edge Over TikTok
Instagram has integrated additional flexibility that sets its tool apart from TikTok’s iteration. Users can sort their watch history in chronological or reverse-chronological order, or even organize the list by the content creator. This update brings the Reels experience closer to parity with its competitor, satisfying a long-standing demand from the user base.
Eliminating Complex Workarounds
Prior to this update, finding a lost Reel often required tedious manual processes, such as requesting and downloading personal data from the app to sift through logs. By streamlining this into a native interface, Instagram has effectively eliminated the need for these technical workarounds.
Meta’s Ongoing Strategy
This release is part of Meta’s broader strategy to enhance the Reels ecosystem by adopting proven features from short-form video competitors. Recent additions, such as the ability to connect multiple Reels into a series and support for Picture-in-Picture viewing, follow the same pattern of feature-parity development aimed at retaining creator and viewer engagement on the platform.
