OpenAI has officially acquired Sky, an innovative AI interface designed for Mac, in a strategic move to accelerate its development of agentic AI systems. The deal, spearheaded by ChatGPT lead Nick Turley and OpenAI’s Head of Applications Fidji Simo, marks a significant consolidation of talent and technology aimed at enhancing user interaction on Apple’s desktop platform.
Privacy Hurdles and the Agentic AI Challenge
While the acquisition positions OpenAI to compete more aggressively in the AI space, the integration faces a major obstacle: Apple’s stringent privacy standards. An agentic system capable of monitoring screens and executing tasks on behalf of a user poses potential security risks for privacy-conscious Mac customers. As noted in recent assessments, AI browsers have a lot of safety risks. Consequently, Apple may require significant time to develop and validate a Mac AI system that matches the capabilities of Sky without compromising its security-first reputation.
Financial Backing and Board Approval
Although the specific financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Sky had previously secured $6.5 million in funding. Key investors included industry heavyweights such as Figma CEO Dylan Field, Context Ventures, Stellation Capital, and notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. According to data from PitchBook, OpenAI clarified that Altman’s involvement was limited to a passive interest held through an investment fund.
The acquisition received formal approval from the OpenAI board, signaling a unified organizational push toward expanding their application suite beyond traditional chat interfaces.
