Bluesky has officially streamlined how publishers monitor referral traffic by routing links through its “go.bsky.app” subdomain, providing newsrooms with clearer data on audience engagement starting this week.
Challenging the Industry Status Quo
This move serves as a direct critique of competitors like X and Threads. X, in particular, has faced criticism for modifying how links appear to prioritize native content over off-site traffic. X owner Elon Musk previously confirmed that the platform’s algorithm is intentionally designed to optimize time spent on-site, often at the expense of external link visibility.
Bluesky’s Growing Influence on Referral Traffic
Recent data from market intelligence firm Similarweb underscores why this update is significant for publishers. In November 2024, Bluesky generated 38.6 million outgoing visits across various news websites, outpacing Threads’ 24.5 million referrals. Notably, Similarweb highlighted that a substantial 42% of traffic from Threads was directed toward its sister app, Instagram, rather than to external publisher domains.
Technical Implementation and Rollout
Following inquiries regarding the timeline of these changes, Bluesky confirmed that the “go” subdomain feature was integrated in version 1.99 of the app released last week, followed by a subsequent bug fix. The company officially announced the change via its own platform, noting that the update is intended to assist newsrooms in accurately measuring the volume of traffic originating from their posts.
“Starting this week, we’ve made it even easier for newsrooms and more to track how much traffic Bluesky is sending to their sites,” the company stated. “For those setting up analytics, Bluesky’s referrer is go.bsky.app.”

A Long-Term Commitment to Publishers
The platform has been actively iterating on referral solutions for several months. While the company opted against an earlier proposal involving an optional opt-out mechanism, development remained a priority. Emily Liu confirmed earlier this month that the referral tracking issues were addressed in the update released on March 10, 2025. Furthermore, additional refinements were deployed on Monday night to resolve remaining technical discrepancies.
