XChat, the new dedicated messaging application from X, officially launched on Friday. Currently available for iOS, the platform enables users to sync their existing X contacts for direct messaging, file sharing, audio and video calls, and group communications.
From Beta Testing to Public Release
The release follows a strategic beta testing phase conducted earlier this year, where a select group of users provided feedback to refine the messaging experience. This launch marks a significant milestone in X’s broader strategy to diversify its ecosystem beyond the main social network, positioning messaging and potential future services—such as payments—as distinct, specialized experiences.
A Shift in Strategy: The “Everything App” Reimagined
Interestingly, the creation of a standalone app signals a departure from Elon Musk’s original vision of an “everything app.” The initial goal was to consolidate messaging, payments, creator content, shopping, and AI under one single interface. Instead, xAI is now pivoting toward a suite of interconnected applications to increase consumer touchpoints.

Privacy and Security Features
XChat arrives with a suite of privacy-focused features, including the ability to edit or delete messages, support for disappearing messages, and a block on screenshots. The company explicitly claims the app contains no advertisements or tracking mechanisms. Furthermore, X asserts that all communications are end-to-end encrypted and PIN-protected.
However, these claims face scrutiny. Security experts have previously disputed the platform’s encryption standards. When the feature was first introduced, critics noted it appeared less secure than established alternatives like Signal. Industry professionals are expected to re-evaluate the app now that it has reached broad public availability to determine if these security concerns have been adequately addressed.

Future Roadmap and Community Integration
Beyond standard messaging, XChat is set to become the new home for X’s Communities. With the company shutting down the native Communities feature on the main platform due to spam and low engagement, this migration could drive significant early adoption for the new app.
Looking ahead, development is far from over. X lead designer Benji Taylor teased that this initial release is “just the beginning of what we’re building for messaging,” suggesting more updates are on the horizon.
