X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has officially launched its Cashtags feature, enabling U.S. users to trade stocks directly from their timelines. This new functionality, revealed on Wednesday, allows users to conduct trades through several participating brokerages, including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase.
The introduction of Cashtags builds on a trend that has long been prevalent on X, where discussions about stocks and cryptocurrencies have flourished. The concept of Cashtags originally emerged in 2008 from Stocktwits, a financial platform that created a system for users to easily identify market discussions by placing a dollar sign ($) before stock ticker symbols.
Previously, Cashtags served merely as a tool for tracking conversations about specific stocks rather than facilitating actual trading. With the launch of X Money, this has now changed, allowing users to trade stocks alongside participating brokerages.
Mridul Singhai, the Product Engineering lead at X, emphasized the significance of this feature, stating, “Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself. When you post or tap a ticker, you’re taken right to the asset, where you have seamless access to the live chart, the conversation around it, and now the ability to trade with one of our brokerage partners.”
Users can interact with the new feature by tapping on a supported Cashtag, which will display the asset’s price chart along with relevant posts from other users. After viewing the necessary information, they can select “Trade” to proceed with a transaction at a partnered brokerage. This process includes signing in to complete trades, and users also have the option to access their brokerage’s mobile app or website for account management or registration.
Monique Pintarelli, head of Global Advertising at SpaceXAI, remarked on the intention behind Cashtags, saying, “With our Cashtag partners, we’re connecting the financial conversation to action. People come to X to discover what’s happening, shape the conversation, and act in real-time on what matters to them.”
Despite the potential benefits of the new trading capability, experts express concerns that it could lead to increased market manipulation. The integration of AI-driven bots and spammers poses a risk, as these entities might try to sway conversations for their benefit. However, some argue that such manipulative practices are already prevalent on the platform, independent of direct brokerage connections.
