X has tapped veteran journalist John Stoll, a former editor and Detroit bureau chief at The Wall Street Journal, to spearhead its news group and partnership team. The appointment was officially unveiled by X Corp. leadership during their keynote session at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, signaling a strategic push to position the platform as a primary hub for modern journalism.
Monetizing Journalism on the X Platform
During a discussion moderated by Catherine Herridge, X Corp. CEO Linda Yaccarino addressed speculation regarding the potential launch of a dedicated news portal. While stopping short of confirming a standalone product, Yaccarino emphasized the company’s commitment to enabling journalists to “explore their craft” and build sustainable careers directly on X. This model relies on the platform’s creator revenue share program, which incentivizes high-engagement content.
Under the current structure, creators with paid subscriptions who meet specific follower and impression thresholds receive financial compensation based on the engagement their content generates among other Premium X users.
The Evolution of News Distribution
The move to compensate journalists based on platform engagement echoes previous industry trends, such as the BuzzFeed model, which historically balanced hard news with viral content—though that strategy often left publishers vulnerable to shifting platform algorithms. Observers note that X could similarly adjust its own algorithms to amplify or suppress specific news categories, potentially impacting how established media outlets are surfaced to users, a dynamic frequently scrutinized in light of Elon Musk’s public stance on mainstream journalism.
Challenging the Legacy Media Model
Yaccarino used the CES platform to draw a sharp distinction between X and traditional news organizations. “The future of news is not legacy media,” Yaccarino stated. She argued that legacy outlets have increasingly prioritized niche audiences to meet budgetary demands rather than fostering true journalistic inquiry. In contrast, she envisions X as a space where “journalistic curiosity” can flourish through direct interaction.
The CEO further highlighted a shift where “the narrative is now in the user’s hand,” framed by the platform’s emphasis on “protected free speech and a two-way conversation.”
Global Expansion Plans
While specific details regarding Stoll’s day-to-day duties remain limited, X confirmed that his primary mandate involves leading the news group and partnership team with a specific focus on scaling news initiatives on a global level. The company intends to leverage this leadership to redefine how news is consumed and shared across its international user base.
