SocialAI, a new application developed by Friendly Apps, allows users to share thoughts in a private, Twitter-like interface where every reply and interaction is generated by AI bots tailored to the user’s preferences. Created by Michael Sayman, the platform aims to provide a safe, reflective space for users to bounce ideas off diverse “communities” of artificial intelligence without the noise or toxicity of traditional social media.
Building the “Magical Diary”
Sayman envisioned SocialAI as a solution to the “emptiness” he felt while using standard journaling apps, which often functioned as nothing more than glorified notes apps. By integrating large language models, he sought to create a “private social network” that feels like a diary, but with the interactive spark of human communication.

Customizing Your AI Echo Chamber
Upon setting up the app, users must select at least three “follower types” from a list of 32, including categories like “intellectuals,” “trolls,” “cheerleaders,” or “problem-solvers.” This selection dictates the tone of the responses you receive. If you crave validation, selecting “supporters” or “charmers” will flood your feed with positive reinforcement. Conversely, choosing “sarcastic” or “brutally honest” bots provides a more cynical, debate-oriented experience.
The app is designed to adapt over time, learning from your interactions to refine the AI chatter. While the bots’ output occasionally relies on clichés, the ability to curate your audience allows for a controlled environment where you are the only human user in the loop.
Evolving Beyond the Chat Interface
Sayman critiques the current AI landscape for being overly reliant on standard chat interfaces, like that of ChatGPT. He believes SocialAI offers a more intuitive way to engage with multiple AI models simultaneously. By utilizing a social media format, the app enables users to compare diverse perspectives on a single thought or question.
“We already have social media products that people use, that are somewhat intuitive for interacting with large numbers of people,” Sayman explains. “So let’s build that. But let’s build the thing that ChatGPT should be.”
A New Direction for Friendly Apps
SocialAI is the latest venture from Sayman’s startup, Friendly Apps. Previous projects include AI-driven music charts and dating personality quizzes, continuing his trend of exploring how AI can mimic human behavior and social dynamics.
Currently, the app is available as a free download with no in-app purchases. Sayman intends to focus on achieving product-market fit before considering further fundraising, positioning the app as a safe haven for users who want to express themselves without the pressure of a real-world audience.
