OpenAI officially launched GPT-5.3 Codex today, an advanced agentic coding model designed to automate complex software development tasks, mere minutes after rival Anthropic released its own competing tool.

Transforming Development with Agentic AI

The company asserts that this new iteration evolves Codex from a basic tool that merely “writes and reviews code” into a sophisticated agent capable of performing “nearly anything developers and professionals do on a computer.” By expanding the scope of what is possible, OpenAI aims to broaden the demographic of who can build software and fundamentally change how professional workflows are executed. Internal testing against various performance benchmarks suggests that the model can successfully build “highly functional complex games and apps from scratch over the course of days.”

Speed, Efficiency, and Self-Evolution

Beyond its functional capabilities, OpenAI reports that GPT-5.3 Codex delivers a 25% speed increase compared to its predecessor, GPT-5.2. A notable milestone for the company, this release marks the first time a model has been “instrumental in creating itself.” Engineering teams utilized early versions of the program to debug the system and evaluate performance metrics during the development cycle, effectively allowing the AI to assist in its own refinement.

The Race for AI Dominance

The launch of GPT-5.3 Codex follows an intense standoff with competitor Anthropic. While both companies initially scheduled the release of their respective agentic coding tools for 10 a.m. PST, Anthropic shifted its timeline by 15 minutes shortly before the deadline. This strategic maneuver allowed Anthropic to narrowly beat OpenAI in the race to publicize their new technology, setting the stage for an aggressive battle in the AI coding market. You can find more details in the official announcement: GPT-5.3 Codex.
