Mastodon is launching a new commercial hosting and support service aimed at brands and institutions, marking a strategic shift to diversify its income beyond traditional donations.
Targeting Institutional Needs
The decentralized social network clarified that these new offerings are specifically designed for organizations—such as brands and public institutions—rather than general-purpose servers open to the public. By providing dedicated infrastructure, Mastodon aims to cater to entities that require professional-grade reliability and oversight for their digital presence.
Flexible Pricing and Custom Controls
While specific pricing details remain undisclosed, the company confirmed it is utilizing a custom billing model. This structure allows clients to tailor their packages based on specific requirements, including hosting capabilities, technical support, and content moderation services. Despite using Mastodon’s infrastructure, these hosted clients retain full autonomy to set their own community rules and moderation policies.
Proven Track Record and Strategic Partnerships
Mastodon has already soft-launched this initiative by securing high-profile clients, including the European Commission, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, the city of Blois in France, and the software developer AltStore. These partnerships have already begun providing the platform with a more predictable revenue stream than the volatile nature of Patreon donations.
Commitment to the Fediverse
The company emphasized that these enterprise services are intended to supplement, not replace, its existing funding model of grants, merchandise, and donations. Furthermore, Mastodon will continue to operate its flagship server, mastodon.social, maintaining it as a primary gateway for individual users entering the fediverse.
“We are excited to expand our services to organisations that share our vision of a free, open, and decentralised social web,” stated Felix Hlatky, Mastodon’s chief financial officer.
Hlatky added that these offerings serve a dual purpose: providing financial stability for the development team while ensuring that the broader Fediverse remains a resilient, community-driven ecosystem.
