The nonprofit organization A New Social has unveiled a new version of its “Bounce” tool, enabling users to seamlessly migrate their social media presence from Mastodon to Bluesky.
Navigating the Migration Process
Moving your social footprint between these platforms involves distinct technical nuances, according to the organization. When transitioning from Mastodon to Bluesky, users should be aware that their original posts and historical content will not migrate along with their account identity, a limitation that differs from migrations in the opposite direction.
Handling Follower Lists and Bridging
The process remains highly functional regarding social connections. When “bouncing” from Bluesky back to Mastodon, if the Mastodon account was previously bridged, the tool ensures that follower lists are merged rather than overwritten, preserving the integrity of your network.
The Philosophy of an Open Social Web
“We believe services like Bluesky and Mastodon are only entry points into the open social web, but those entry points should not be a trap into yet another ecosystem,” states the official announcement from A New Social. “People should be able to change their minds, use the technologies that work best for them, and still connect with their people, no matter what they use.”
Availability and Future Updates
Bounce 2 is scheduled to launch later this month. The project continues to operate as a nonprofit, relying on community support to maintain and develop these interoperability tools.
