CONTEUDO:
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has officially fined X, formerly Twitter, for failing to provide transparent information regarding the platform’s measures to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSAM).
Why Australia Took Action Against X
Authorities have expressed deep concern over the platform’s lack of transparency. According to the eSafety Commissioner, if X and other major tech giants cannot provide clear answers on how they are addressing child sexual exploitation, it suggests either a deliberate avoidance of public scrutiny or a critical failure in internal oversight. Both scenarios represent a significant breach of the responsibilities expected by the Australian public.
Erosion of Trust and Safety Standards
Concerns regarding X’s safety protocols have intensified following a series of operational changes. Last month, X removed the user option to report political misinformation. This decision prompted an open letter from the digital research group Reset.Australia, which warned that the move could leave harmful content unreviewed and in violation of the platform’s own stated policies.
Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company, the platform has undergone significant restructuring, including mass layoffs within the Trust and Safety teams. Additionally, the company disbanded its Trust & Safety Council last December—an advisory body previously tasked with guiding the platform on the effective removal of CSAM. As part of broader cost-cutting initiatives, X also shuttered its physical office in Australia earlier this year.
Global Regulatory Pressure Mounts
The situation in Australia is part of a larger, global trend of increased regulatory scrutiny toward major social media platforms. Earlier this month, India issued a formal notice to X, YouTube, and Telegram, demanding the immediate removal of CSAM from their respective services.
Simultaneously, the European Union has intensified its oversight. Last week, the EU issued a formal request to X under the Digital Services Act (DSA), requiring the company to detail the specific steps it is taking to mitigate the spread of misinformation related to the Israel-Hamas war.
