India is revolutionizing its digital marketplace as fintech giants Razorpay and Cashfree Payments launch AI-powered agentic commerce pilots, integrating platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to enable seamless, chatbot-led transactions.
Expanding the AI Shopping Frontier
Razorpay is currently spearheading negotiations with major merchants beyond its initial partners, BigBasket and Vi, aiming for a broader rollout in the coming months, according to company officials.
The race for the Indian market is intensifying. While Google already maintains a deep local presence through Android, Search, and YouTube, rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic are aggressively establishing local footprints. These firms are actively working to localize their AI offerings specifically for the Indian consumer base, driven by a surge in regional user adoption.
Privacy and Protocol: How It Works
A critical aspect of this initiative is data security. Mathur confirmed that AI companies will not have access to sensitive payment data. Instead, users will maintain control by pre-authorizing transaction amounts directly through the chatbots, secured by robust two-factor authentication.
The current strategy does not involve a formal revenue-sharing model between the fintech providers and AI developers. However, the integration is expected to significantly boost user retention for AI providers like OpenAI.

Industry-Wide Adoption
Global tech giants are also aligning with this trend. OpenAI recently introduced an “Instant Checkout” experience and an Agentic Commerce Protocol in partnership with Stripe. Similarly, Google has launched its Agent Payments Protocol, designed to facilitate transactions performed by AI agents on behalf of users.
Cashfree Payments has entered the fray with its own Agentic Payments MCP, supporting major methods like cards and UPI. While merchants must build their own shopping agents to integrate with this protocol, the potential is clear: Cashfree demonstrated the technology by showing a chatbot successfully facilitating the purchase of an iPhone.
“This is still an early, forward-looking concept, but one with tremendous potential. Its adoption will naturally grow in line with how fast shopping agents take off,” noted Reeju Datta, co-founder of Cashfree Payments.
While specific enterprise partners remain undisclosed, Cashfree is actively exploring these integrations with large-scale merchants across the e-commerce and lending sectors.
