Reddit revealed on Thursday that its AI-powered search engine is now a primary growth pillar, shifting from a product feature to a major revenue-generating engine. During the company’s Q4 earnings call, executives confirmed that integrating traditional search with AI capabilities is a top priority, labeling the move an “enormous market opportunity” despite current monetization being in the early stages.
Generative AI: The New Standard for Reddit Queries
The platform is positioning generative AI search as the superior solution for the majority of user queries. CEO Steve Huffman emphasized that Reddit holds a unique advantage over competitors: providing human-centric answers for complex questions that lack a single definitive solution.
“There’s a type of query we’re, I think, particularly good at — I would argue, the best on the internet — which is questions that have no answers, where the answer actually is multiple perspectives from lots of people,” Huffman stated.
While traditional search functions primarily as a navigational tool to locate specific links or subreddits, Reddit believes Large Language Models (LLMs) can handle these tasks more efficiently. The company is actively moving to unify these technologies to improve user outcomes.
Rapid Adoption and Search Growth
The data underscores a clear shift in user behavior. Over the past year, weekly active users for Reddit’s search function surged 30%, jumping from 60 million to 80 million. Even more striking is the adoption of “Reddit Answers,” the platform’s AI-driven feature, which grew from 1 million weekly active users in Q1 2025 to 15 million by the fourth quarter.
To capitalize on this momentum, the company is modernizing the AI interface to support media-rich responses, with pilot programs currently in progress.
Personalization and Future Strategy
Reddit is evolving beyond its identity as a social site, aiming to become a primary destination for information retrieval. A key part of this strategy involves removing the barrier between logged-in and logged-out users starting in Q3 2026. By leveraging AI and machine learning, Reddit intends to deliver a personalized experience for every visitor, regardless of their account status.
Building on the 2025 announcement to merge Reddit Answers with its core search engine, the company reported “significant progress” in Q4. Recent updates include the addition of five new languages to Reddit Answers and the pilot testing of dynamic agents that provide search results incorporating media beyond simple text.
Licensing Content for AI Training
Beyond its own search tools, Reddit is monetizing its massive data repository by licensing content to third-party AI developers. This sector is a key component of the company’s “other” revenue stream. In Q4, this category grew 8% year-over-year to $36 million, contributing to a total of $140 million for the full year of 2025—a 22% increase.
