Roblox is expanding its AI-powered age-estimation technology to all users and integrating standardized global content ratings via the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), the company announced Wednesday, amid mounting legal pressure regarding child safety on its platform.
Advanced Age Estimation and Communication Controls
By the end of this year, the platform will roll out its age-estimation system to every user accessing communication tools, including voice and text chat. The technology functions by scanning user selfies to analyze facial features and estimate age, serving as a more robust alternative to simple self-reported birth dates. This system works in tandem with existing ID verification and parental consent protocols, with the company confirming plans to further restrict interactions between adults and minors.
Global Standardization of Content Ratings
Through its partnership with IARC, Roblox will replace its internal maturity labels with industry-standard ratings tailored to specific regions. U.S. users will see ESRB ratings, while international players will receive localized guidance, such as GRAC in South Korea, USK in Germany, and PEGI across Europe and the U.K. These standardized labels are designed to help parents identify content involving violence, gore, gambling, or adult language, based on established rating criteria.
Building on Previous Safety Initiatives
These updates build upon safety features introduced in July, which utilized video selfies to verify age and prevent users under 13 from accessing unfiltered chat. Additionally, Roblox has implemented restrictions for 13-to-17-year-olds, prohibiting them from adding “trusted connections” unless the relationship is verified via contact imports or QR scans.
Regulatory Pressure and Platform Security
The move arrives as global regulators intensify scrutiny on social platforms. Legislation similar to the U.K.’s Online Safety Act and various U.S. state laws—including measures in Arizona, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Virginia—has forced tech companies to adopt stricter age-assurance standards. Beyond age checks, Roblox utilizes Roblox Sentinel, an open-source AI designed to preemptively detect child endangerment.
Ongoing Challenges and Legal Scrutiny
Despite these technical interventions, Roblox continues to face significant criticism. Lawsuits filed by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill and other plaintiffs in California, Texas, and Pennsylvania allege that child predators still exploit the platform. Furthermore, reports, including a study highlighted by The Guardian, suggest that inappropriate content remains accessible to minors. The platform also recently faced controversy over its virtual economies, which critics argue can lure children into predatory spending patterns.
Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, emphasized that the company remains focused on empowering parents to make informed decisions. “We’re excited to partner with IARC and hope it will provide parents globally with more clarity and confidence regarding age-appropriate content,” Kaufman stated.
