The new alarm clock app Awake is tackling chronic oversleeping by requiring users to finish specific tasks before the alarm sound will turn off. Developed to combat the snooze-button habit, the app forces heavy sleepers to engage with their environment rather than simply tapping a screen to silence the noise.
Gamifying Your Morning Routine
Awake offers a free version, with an optional premium subscription priced at $6.49 per month or $19.99 per year. The premium tier unlocks a variety of interactive “missions” designed to fully rouse the user. These include tasks such as turning on a room light, scanning a specific QR code, or walking a set number of steps to deactivate the alarm. For those needing a more mindful start, one mission even requires users to recite a specific mantra to prove they are conscious.
Future Features: The “Wake Up Check”
Looking ahead, creator Mehlig envisions incorporating a feature called “Wake Up Check,” which will double-check if people are truly awake after completing a mission. By using the step counter, the app will track users’ movement after the mission; if no movement is detected, it will send a notification. If the user does not respond within a few minutes, the app will trigger another alarm to ensure they don’t fall back asleep.
