Mozilla officially integrated Perplexity’s AI answer engine into Firefox on Tuesday, allowing users to replace traditional search providers with an AI-driven experience directly within their existing browser.
Global Expansion Following Successful Pilot
Mozilla previously announced a limited pilot of this integration across the U.S., U.K., and Germany to gauge interest. Following positive user feedback, the company is now rolling out Perplexity to all desktop users, with mobile support expected to follow in the coming months.

How the AI-Powered Search Works
Once enabled, Perplexity replaces the standard list of web links with a conversational interface that provides direct answers backed by citations. Users can access this via the unified search button in the address bar or by setting it as their default provider within the Firefox settings.
Mozilla chose to pilot Perplexity due to the startup’s commitment to not sharing or selling user data. Depending on the long-term success of this integration, the company may explore adding additional AI engines in the future.
New Profile Management and Visual Search
Beyond the AI search update, Mozilla is officially launching its profile management feature. This allows users to create distinct browser environments tailored for specific needs, such as separating work, school, or personal browsing data.
Additionally, the company is continuing its testing of visual search capabilities via Google Lens, specifically for desktop users who maintain Google as their default search provider.
