Pro-Trump conservative activists are accusing Elon Musk of enforcing censorship on X, claiming the platform is suppressing voices that diverge from the billionaire’s personal interests, according to CNN reports.
The Clash Over H-1B Visas
The friction ignited when political activist Laura Loomer challenged Musk’s stance on H-1B work visas, a policy the tech mogul supports. Following this online debate, Loomer now claims that X stripped her account of its verification status and demonetized her content, leading her to publicly label Musk a “free speech fraud.”
Allegations of Personal Retaliation
The controversy extended to another conservative figure, Charles C. Johnson, who claims that his account was banned as retribution. Johnson asserts he was targeted after he “embarrassed” Musk by publishing reports regarding his father’s alleged past involvement in an emerald mine—a narrative that Musk has long denied. To date, neither Loomer’s nor Johnson’s claims of targeted censorship have been independently substantiated.
Free Speech vs. Platform Control
These accusations stand in stark contrast to Musk’s long-standing public persona as a champion of free speech. He has frequently posted that the concept is “the bedrock of democracy.” However, critics have consistently accused the platform of silencing dissent. A notable precedent occurred in 2022, when X temporarily suspended several journalists who were covering the suspension of an account dedicated to tracking Musk’s private jet.
X Remains Silent
The company, now under Musk’s ownership, did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding these latest allegations of ideological suppression.
