Patreon has officially announced that Apple is requiring all creators to transition to its in-app purchase system for subscription billing by November 1, 2026, following a series of conflicting mandates from the tech giant.
The Impact of Apple’s New Deadline
While the upcoming changes will exclusively affect the 4% of creators currently utilizing Patreon’s legacy billing models, the platform is criticizing Apple’s inconsistent policy shifts. Patreon argues that these recurring changes create significant instability for creators attempting to manage long-term, sustainable businesses.
A History of Shifting Requirements
The conflict traces back to a 2024 mandate in which Apple threatened to remove Patreon from the App Store unless it transitioned all creators to Apple’s in-app purchase structure. Apple’s primary grievance was that Patreon’s management of subscription billing for certain creators was perceived as a way to bypass standard App Store commission structures.
Initially, Patreon was granted a timeline to migrate customers, with a deadline set for November 2025. Creators were given the option to adjust their subscription pricing to offset Apple’s fees or delay the transition. However, last May, following the U.S. court ruling in Epic v. Apple, Patreon utilized loosened guidelines to allow creators to process web payments directly through links in the app. At that time, the company informed creators that the 2025 deadline was suspended, leading to the current confusion as Apple now reimposes a transition deadline for 2026.
Patreon’s Stance on Policy Whiplash
Despite complying with the new directive, Patreon has expressed strong disapproval regarding Apple’s influence over creator operations. In a formal statement, the company noted, “We strongly disagree with this decision.”
“Creators need consistency and clarity in order to build healthy, long-term businesses. Instead, creators using legacy billing will now have to endure the whiplash of another policy reversal — the third such change from Apple in the past 18 months. Over the years, we have proposed multiple tools and features to Apple that we could’ve built to allow creators using legacy billing to transition on their own timelines, with more support added in. Unfortunately, Apple has continually declined them,” the company added.
Resources for Creators
Creators can find comprehensive details regarding the transition plan on Patreon’s website. To assist with the migration, Patreon has introduced several specialized tools, including a benefit eligibility tool, tier repricing tools, and new discount and gifting options. Furthermore, the platform plans to roll out an annual-only membership option prior to the November 2026 deadline.
