Mining startup Durin has successfully raised $3.4 million in funding to develop autonomous drilling technology specifically designed for the critical minerals exploration sector.
Launching the First Drilling Program
The startup is currently embarking on its inaugural drilling program. According to founder Feldmann, the company expects to gather sufficient data by the end of the year to begin constructing its core automation model. The roadmap is aggressive: Feldmann anticipates that drill rigs could be operating completely unattended within the next two to three years.
Redefining the Role of On-Site Personnel
While the technology aims to remove the need for manual operation, the human element remains vital to the process. Feldmann clarified that drilling companies will still require personnel on-site to handle logistics. These workers will shift their focus from direct operation to delivering supplies, monitoring real-time progress, and retrieving completed core samples at the end of each shift.
Improving Safety and Efficiency
The primary objective of the automation push is to enhance safety and operational efficiency by removing workers from high-risk zones near the machinery. “What we’re trying to eliminate is a need for there to be guys standing around the rig while it’s operating,” Feldmann stated.
