Mastodon, the decentralized rival to X, officially launched a line of branded plush toys on Tuesday to help fund the development of its open-source social network.
From Digital Network to Physical Collectible
If you prefer decentralized social networks that prioritize user autonomy over billionaire-led platforms, you can now show your support through merchandise. The company has introduced cute, plush versions of the mastodon—the prehistoric, tusked proto-elephant that serves as the platform’s namesake and mascot—began selling its own merchandise.
A Response to User Demand
The decision to expand into merchandise follows a successful internal poll conducted last year, where over 6,700 users expressed interest in purchasing official items. A subsequent test run featuring mugs, t-shirts, and pins saw all 250 units of each item sell out rapidly, proving that the community was eager to support the platform financially.
Plushie Details and Shipping Hurdles
The current flagship product is the Mastodon plushie, priced at $45. Standing 35 cm tall, the washable, cushioned toy is marketed as being comfortable enough to function as a travel pillow. While the demand is global, U.S. customers face a temporary delay; shipping to the United States has been stalled due to recent weather conditions, leaving the initial rollout limited to the EU.
Impact on Operational Funding
The launch proved immediately successful, with 176 units sold within the first few hours, generating nearly $8,000 in revenue before manufacturing and shipping costs. By the end of the first day, sales exceeded 200 units. While this revenue is modest compared to the salary requirements of a full development team, it provides a meaningful contribution toward the company’s ongoing server expenses.
The Challenge of Scaling Decentralization
Mastodon, which relies heavily on funding via Patreon according to founder and CEO Eugen Rochko, faces an uphill battle to compete with industry giants like X and Meta’s Threads. Despite the financial disparity, the community continues to rally behind the platform, sharing their purchases on social media under the hashtag #plushtodon as they fund the project’s future.
