Meta Tests Stand-Alone ‘Vibes’ App to Rival OpenAI’s Sora

Meta is officially testing a stand-alone application for its AI-generated video platform, “Vibes,” aiming to transition the feature from a sub-menu within Meta AI into a dedicated, immersive social experience.

A Dedicated Home for AI Creativity

Launched last September, Vibes allows users to create, share, and discover short-form videos generated entirely by artificial intelligence. While the feature previously resided exclusively within the Meta AI app, this move signifies a strategic pivot to position the tool as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s Sora and other dedicated AI-video platforms.

“Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” Meta stated in an email. The company noted that users are increasingly using the format to interact with friends, prompting the need for a more focused environment. Meta plans to expand the app’s capabilities based on community feedback.

Challenging the Competition

The development was first reported by Platformer. While Meta declined to share specific user metrics, the company maintains that Vibes has performed exceptionally well, with steady growth in Meta AI usage signaling a clear market demand for a specialized, stand-alone video creation tool.

How Vibes Works

Vibes functions similarly to TikTok or Instagram Reels, but with a fully AI-driven content feed. Users have the ability to generate videos from scratch or “remix” existing content found in their feed. The platform offers robust customization options, allowing creators to add new visuals, layer music, and adjust aesthetic styles before publishing.

Once a video is ready, users can post directly to the Vibes feed, send it via direct message, or cross-post content to their Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels. Meta reports that sharing and collaboration are on the rise, mirroring the social engagement patterns seen on its mainstream platforms.

The Future of Monetization

Meta’s ambitions for the platform extend beyond user growth. The company confirmed it is exploring premium subscriptions for its AI features, including Vibes. While the tool is currently free, the long-term plan involves a “freemium” model where users can create videos for free but pay a subscription fee to unlock advanced creation tools and expanded capabilities. These subscription tests are expected to roll out in the coming months.
