Truecaller has introduced a new feature allowing users to proactively disconnect scam calls on behalf of their family members, aiming to curb the rising tide of sophisticated fraud. This update comes as the company leverages advanced AI to screen incoming calls and automatically terminate connections when trigger phrases like “digital arrest”—a common tactic used by scammers impersonating law enforcement—are detected.
Combating the Surge in Fraudulent Activity
Scam calls have surged in India, resulting in significant financial losses nationwide. Truecaller reported identifying over 7.7 billion fraud calls in the last year alone. Meanwhile, Indian authorities are implementing aggressive strategies to combat this, including a controversial policy known as SIM binding, which could potentially disrupt the functionality of messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
Navigating Market Headwinds
The company is currently navigating a difficult financial period, with its stock value dropping by more than 80% over the past 12 months. During its Q4 2025 earnings report, Truecaller disclosed that its EBITDA—a key metric for operating profitability—fell by 49% year-on-year, while advertising revenue saw a 31% decline.
The CNAP Challenge
Truecaller also faces pressure from the Indian government’s Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) system. This government-mandated feature displays the caller’s name as registered with their telecom provider. Truecaller maintains that while CNAP is a step forward, it is insufficient to stop spam, arguing that its own community-based reporting provides significantly more context and protection.
Leadership Perspective on Future Growth
“In India, there has been much talk about the imminent rollout of CNAP,” said Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala during the Q4 2025 earnings call. “CNAP is partially rolled out, and so far, the impact on our user growth is limited. As we have said in the past, we expect that CNAP might have some impact on user growth, but that remains to be seen as CNAP reaches a full rollout.”
Jhunjhunwala added, “Our focus continues to be on delivering a superior product, and as you are aware, the consumer can choose to have CNAP and Truecaller in parallel, where we provide a lot more information and a lot more context and various other solutions, for the consumer.”
