Bluesky Opens Doors to World Leaders Ahead of Global Elections

Social networking platform Bluesky has officially lifted its ban on heads of state, allowing world leaders to register and join the service as major elections approach in the U.S., India, and beyond.

Shifting Policy for Global Figures

During its initial invite-only phase last year, Bluesky maintained a strict policy prohibiting heads of state from joining the platform. At the time, the company explicitly requested that its user base refrain from sending invitations to high-profile political figures.

“We appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm in sending invitations, but our current policy is that we cannot accommodate heads of state to join us in our beta yet. This applies to recent/prominent heads of state as well,” the company stated during that period.

This restriction remained in place until February, when the startup officially opened its doors to the general public after nearly a year of operating under an invite-only model.

Building Infrastructure for Moderation

The decision to welcome political leaders follows a period of intense focus on platform safety. In its early stages, Bluesky grappled with significant moderation hurdles, including the need to prevent users from incorporating racial slurs into their profile handles. Additionally, the user community has consistently pressured the platform to implement stricter measures against hate speech.

To address these concerns, Bluesky significantly bolstered its moderation framework. In December 2023, the platform introduced automated moderation tools and user-generated moderation lists. This was followed last month by the announcement of “Ozone,” a specialized tool designed to empower users to create their own independent labeling and moderation services.

Political Discourse and Algorithmic Choice

As the platform prepares for an influx of political discourse, its approach differs notably from competitors like Meta’s Threads, which has taken steps to limit the active recommendation of political content. Bluesky maintains a different philosophy, allowing users to bypass a central algorithm entirely by subscribing to custom, community-driven feeds.
