Meta is expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities by implementing a new feature that suggests edits for photos stored locally on your smartphone, further integrating its proprietary AI models into user devices.
Leveraging Social Data for AI Training
Meta has been leveraging its position as a dominant social network to improve its AI technology and had previously announced it would train its image recognition AI on publicly shared data, including posts and comments on Facebook and Instagram. (EU users had until May 27, 2025, to opt out.)
Expansion Beyond Social Media Feeds
The company’s push into image analysis extends beyond user-generated content on its platforms. Last year, Meta confirmed it would also train its AI systems using images that Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses users requested the device to analyze, signaling a broader strategy to capture visual data across multiple hardware and software touchpoints.
