Duolingo has recorded a massive 216% surge in U.S. users studying Chinese, a trend coinciding with ongoing regulatory scrutiny of TikTok and a widespread migration of American social media users toward the Chinese platform RedNote.
Early Indicators of a Linguistic Shift
Data from January 3 shows that Duolingo experienced a 36% increase in U.S. downloads across the App Store and Google Play. Industry analysts interpret this early spike as a precursor to the broader trend, suggesting that users began exploring Chinese-language digital ecosystems well before the migration to RedNote gained significant momentum later in the month.

Rapid Climb in App Store Rankings
The impact of this interest is clearly reflected in app store performance metrics. Just one week ago, the language-learning platform was positioned in the 40s for both “Top Apps” (excluding games) and “Top Overall” rankings. Currently, the app has jumped to the No. 22 spot in “Top Overall” and holds the No. 20 position in “Top Apps,” signaling a sustained and growing interest in Chinese language proficiency among the U.S. user base.
