X is officially rolling out 4K video upload capabilities for select creators, a strategic move designed to bolster platform engagement and challenge video giants like YouTube and Vimeo. According to an announcement from X’s engineering account, this high-definition feature will soon expand to include all premium subscribers.
Elevating the Standard for Premium Creators
Previously, the platform capped video quality for paying subscribers at 1080p, with a maximum file size of 8GB and a duration of approximately three hours, as outlined on X’s support page. With the transition to 4K resolution, the company is expected to revisit and potentially adjust these file size constraints to accommodate the higher data requirements of ultra-high-definition content.
Aggressive Expansion in the Video Space
Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company, X has consistently prioritized video content as a core pillar of its growth strategy. By incrementally raising upload limits, the platform aims to transform from a text-centric microblogging site into a comprehensive hub for long-form and high-quality video media.
Competing for the Vertical Video Market
Beyond resolution upgrades, X has been aggressively iterating on its user interface to keep viewers within its ecosystem. Earlier this year, the platform introduced a dedicated vertical video feed, complete with a prominent shortcut on the mobile app home screen. This design shift is a direct attempt to capture the audience shift caused by ongoing regulatory uncertainty surrounding TikTok in the United States.
