Pinterest announced on Tuesday that it will lay off nearly 15% of its workforce as part of a strategic shift to reduce office space and aggressively pivot resources toward artificial intelligence development.
In a regulatory filing, the company confirmed that the restructuring process is expected to reach completion by late September.
Strategic Shift Toward AI Innovation
The company stated that the internal reorganization is designed to reallocate capital toward AI-focused teams. The primary objective is to accelerate the adoption and execution of machine learning, prioritizing the development of new AI-powered products and enhanced platform capabilities.
Impact on Workforce and Finances
With a total of 4,666 full-time employees reported at the end of 2024, these cuts are expected to affect approximately 700 workers. To facilitate this transition, Pinterest anticipates recording pre-tax restructuring charges ranging from $35 million to $45 million.
Pinterest’s AI-Driven Roadmap
This workforce reduction aligns with a broader industry-wide trend of tech companies tightening operations to fund expensive AI infrastructure. Pinterest has already begun integrating these technologies into its core user experience, most notably with the launch of “Pinterest Assistant,” an AI-powered shopping companion. Additionally, the platform is currently testing personalized boards driven by generative AI.
During the most recent earnings call, Pinterest CEO Bill Ready highlighted the role of open-source AI models in the company’s future, noting that such technology will be instrumental in managing long-term operational costs while maintaining competitive growth.
