To mark its 25th anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation has officially announced a series of strategic partnerships with major AI tech companies, integrating them as clients of its commercial arm, Wikimedia Enterprise. This service enables the large-scale distribution and reuse of data from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Expanding the Enterprise Ecosystem
Building on its 2022 partnership with Google, the foundation disclosed for the first time that it has successfully onboarded Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity over the past year. These industry giants join existing partners such as Ecosia, Pleias, ProRata, Nomic, and Reef Media, all of whom utilize the Enterprise product to power their respective services.
These agreements create a sustainable revenue model as AI models increasingly rely on Wikipedia’s vast repository to deliver rapid, factual responses to user queries. Beyond simple monetization, Wikimedia Enterprise offers these corporations high-volume, high-speed access to data, specifically optimized to meet the technical requirements of modern AI infrastructure.
Wikipedia’s Enduring Global Impact
The foundation highlighted that Wikipedia remains a top-10 global website, hosting over 65 million articles across 300 languages and generating nearly 15 billion views every month.
“Wikipedia shows that knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans. Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-powered knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever,” stated Selena Deckelmann, CPO/CTO of the Wikimedia Foundation. “With continued help from readers, volunteer editors, donors, partners, and fans across the globe, Wikipedia will remain the crucial hub for human-powered knowledge and collaboration online for the next 25 years and beyond.”
Anniversary Celebrations and Future Strategy
Beyond the tech partnerships, the foundation has kicked off a comprehensive anniversary campaign. This includes a documentary series showcasing volunteers globally and a “25 Years of Wikipedia” time capsule, featuring narration from founder Jimmy Wales. A commemorative livestream event is scheduled for January 15 at 4:00 p.m. UTC, accessible via Wikipedia’s official YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels.
The milestone also serves as a platform to showcase recent organizational progress, including upgrades to technical infrastructure, a human-centric approach to AI, and experimental projects ranging from interactive games to short-form video content.
