Prosus Snaps Up Travel Giant Despegar in $1.7B Deal

nets45 December 23, 2024

Prosus has officially acquired Latin American travel heavyweight Despegar for $1.7 billion, marking a significant consolidation move in the regional tourism technology sector. This high-profile transaction underscores a broader wave of capital flowing into travel-tech, following closely on the heels of Hostaway’s $365 million funding round led by General Atlantic last week.

A Legacy Player in Latin America

Despegar stands as one of the most established online travel agencies in the market. Since its inception in 1999 during the initial dot-com boom, the company has grown into a dominant force, notably controlling the major Brazilian travel brand Decolar. Its long-standing reputation has attracted a prestigious roster of historical backers over the decades, including Accel, Tiger Global, Sequoia, hotel giant Accor, TPG, and even Yahoo.

Market Reach and Service Ecosystem

Today, the company maintains a robust footprint across 19 different markets throughout Latin America. Its business model is twofold: it operates a direct-to-consumer platform while simultaneously providing a sophisticated white-label service. This B2B offering is widely utilized by airlines, banks, and various retailers to integrate travel booking capabilities directly into their own customer interfaces.

Modernization and Financial Performance

To remain competitive against rivals like Hotel Urbano, Despegar has aggressively modernized its digital infrastructure, most notably through the deployment of “Sofia,” its proprietary conversational chatbot. The company’s scale remains substantial, reporting roughly 9.5 million annual transactions. According to its 2023 full-year results, the firm generated $5.3 billion in gross bookings, yielding $706 million in revenue and an EBITDA of $116 million.
